Casino for Broome The proposal for a Casino has been on the burner for some time now, with many locals passionately against whilst many others think it will be the saviour for Broome’s economic growth. The program was officially approved June 10 by the New York State Education Department.
The 63-credit program includes courses in marketing, the gaming industry, accounting, hospitality law and more, as well as a casino internship and a bartending class.
SUNY Broome also offers a 15-credit Casino Management Certificate that includes gaming surveillance and security, casino games, a casino operations management course and an internship.
SUNY Broome has its own mock casino, dubbed Casino Vespa, in the Science Building basement. The $300,000 facility includes a blackjack table, craps table, roulette wheel and a full-service bar, complete with casino ambiance and décor.

Mission
The mission of the Lodging & Casino Management AAS at SUNY Broome – a public institution of higher education – is the creation and refinement of lodging and casino operations professionals. Creation and refinement are achieved through a combination of applied learning and didactic instructional approaches delivered through a variety of platforms. Our efforts revolve around guiding core values concerning enhanced sanitation and safety, ethics, excellence, diversity, leadership, sustainability, and fiscal responsibility.
Program Learning Outcomes
- Understand the function of a lodging operation's front office.
- Understand the basics of lodging and casino management events and event management.
- Understand and describe the hospitality lodging and gaming regulations and laws found throughout the industry.
- Possess an understanding of basic requirements for hospitality marketing and promotions specific to the lodging and gaming industry.
- Possess an introductory understanding of lodging and gaming financial and cost accounting control found in a variety of hospitality venues.

Lodging and Casino Management prepares individuals to manage a variety of lodging operations including, but not limited to, hotels, resorts, motels, bed and breakfasts, casinos and gaming establishments. It includes instruction in front office operations, casino gaming, hospitality business ethics and law, hospitality marketing and human resources, the mathematics of gaming and the psychology of advertising and addiction. Students are prepared for careers across a broad spectrum of hospitality venues both internationally and domestic.
